I Am a Feminist But I Am Not a...

I Am a Feminist But I Am Not a... Buzzfeed bloggers Uk feminism lifestyle

Whenever you choose to identify with a label, that label is more than likely going to come with a long list of negative stereotypes and preconceptions that society as built up about those people over the years. This is wrong. Full stop. I think it's really important to speak openly about the labels you choose to identify with and educate people, what it really means to fall under that label and how nine times out of 10, their preconceived ideas are completely wrong.

Buzzfeed does this brilliantly, in their series ' I am a ... but I am not a'' Basically, where lots of different people who all identify with one label whether that be their religion, sexual orientation or anything else really, share what it means to them to be a Muslim, asexual or whatever their label is etc. and how they are not or don't have the negative attributes that are commonly associated with that label.

Today, Róisín and I thought we would bring this concept to our blog's and share with you labels that we fall under and educate you on some of the negative associations attached to these labels, that we are definitely not! I am going to be sharing with you what it means to me to be a feminist (because you all know I am a loud and proud feminist) and Róisín is going to be talking about the stigmas that surround being a teenager. You can check out Róisín's post HERE! Enjoy!

I am feminist but I am not angry. I don't get angry at stay at home mums nor am I angry at men. I am a feminist but I don't go on big angry marches with placards screaming my opinions at people and shoving my views down people's throats. I am a feminist and I like to have rational discussions with people about feminism.

I am a feminist but I don't hate men. I even have male friends. I am a feminist and believe in the equality for both men and women. And equality between masculinity and femininity. I am a feminist but I don't believe that women are better than men. I am a feminist and I don't believe in gender roles and stereotypes for neither men or women.

I am feminist but I am not ignorant, hyper-opinionated or misinformed. But I am willing to speak my mind. I am a feminist but I am a listener, kind and not a stroppy cow (well most of the time I'm not)

I am a feminist but I shave my armpits and my legs! But I do it because I want to not because I need to conform to society's pity expectations of what women should look like. I am a feminist but I am not a lesbian. I don't ride a motorbike or wear doc Martians. I also don't Prance around wearing hippy clothes or talk to nature. I am a feminist and I dress and speak just like any other member of society. Because I am just another member of society. I am a feminist but I wear makeup. This does not make me a bad feminist.

I am a feminist and I recognise the systematic and historical oppression women have faced. However I am a feminist but I know feminism is not just exclusively for women. I am a feminist and I support people of all genders and ethnic backgrounds to support the movement of feminism.

I am a feminist and I believe that women should not be treated like objects. I am a feminist because I want women to be able to stand up for themselves and speak up about important issues without needing a man. I am a feminist and I want women to be able to speak up about issues such as rape, cat calling and domestic violence. I am feminist but I also understand that men can be made victim to all of these things. This is not okay.

I am a feminist but I don't want more rights than men. I am a feminist and I want to be paid fairly and equally to my as equal experienced male co-workers. I am a feminist and I don't mind being turned down for a job promotion because I am not skilled/ experienced enough to fulfil the role not because I am just a women. I believe that no gender should have more rights than the other. We should both be on equal terms.

I am a feminist but I don't go around putting pictures of my period on the Internet. However I am a feminist and I believe that we should talk openly about periods and not be ashamed to simply get a clean pad out before walking to the toilet. I am feminist and I believe in period pride. I am a feminist and I also believe talking about taboo subjects including; body hair, female masturbation etc. Should be discussed more openly to remove the stigma.

I am a feminist and I am a woman. I am a feminist and I am a student. I am a feminist and I want to live to see the day where women and men are treated as equals. I want to see the day when rape victims aren't automatically told they were asking for it by the clothes they were wearing or the way in which they were acting.

I am a feminist and I want to encourage more women to talk about taboo subjects but I also want to encourage more men to talk more openly about their emotions. I am feminist but I am an advocate for supporting men's mental health and emotional wellbeing. More men are likely to die from suicide because they are too afraid to seek help in fear of not being manly or losing their male dominance status. I am a feminist and I don't just care about women. I care about men too!

I am a feminist and I think you should be too!

Are you a feminist? Why or why not? If you are a feminist what negative stereotypes have you faced? I would love to know in the comments below!
