22 Pieces Of Advice I Would Give All College/ Sixth Form Freshers

For some people, college can be the best two years of their life. You have more freedom and expression. Your doing subjects that you should enjoy and you have more control over how you study. You can wear your own clothes, eat more food and just generally experience more than what you ever did at school.

For others, college is hell. It's a big place, with lots of new people. It can be lonely and intimidating all at the same time. There are more work and responsibility. There are more things to remember, more deadlines and tests. With all this on top of any other issues or problems you are going through; mental illness, family troubles, relationship difficulties, etc. College can be a tough place.

Whether you are excited or nervous to be starting college in September or even a bit of both, I wanted to share will you 22 pieces of advice, of things I have learnt from my own personal experiences. I hope you find this useful.

1. Don't worry that you wore that outfit yesterday. No one will notice/ care. They will be more interested in the kids with bleach blonde hair and full on rainbow dungarees

2. Dress comfortably. Don't worry what others are wearing. Wear what makes you happy and comfortable. It doesn't have to be casual if that's not the kind of vibes you're going for.

3. If you are going to invest in anything, though. A good pair of jeans, trainers and a sturdy bag is a good place to start.

4. The library is there for a good reason, so please use it. Trust me, come April you will be fighting for seats.

5. Equally, if you want some quiet time to yourself, the library is a perfect place to be. Just pop in some headphones and don't give a shit about what anyone else thinks around you.

6. You're probably going to have to send a lot of emails over the years to various people and tutors. So it's best if you start learning how to sign them off properly now.

7. Be organised. I don't care how you organise your stuff; binders, notebooks, folders, etc. The thing that matters is that it makes sense to you, and you know where everything is so you never miss a deadline.

8. Don't be tempted to waste your money on junk food at 10 o'clock in the morning. A burger and chips will not sustain you for the rest of the day. If you get into bad habits early, they stick with you.

9. Try and make the most out of college life. Sign up to clubs and enrichments. But also don't be afraid to tell someone if it is getting too much for you and you are feeling stressed out, they should listen to you.

10. Make the most out of the services college provides you with. If you are unsure of what you want to do when you leave college, go to your careers advisor, and they should hopefully be able to guide you in the right direction.

11. Get a book bag or a tote bag. Primark makes a wide selection of cute and naff designs for you to choose from. Your need one for all the text books you are going to have. Trust me your bag won't be big enough.

12. Wear a watch always. Your phone will die. It's inevitable. You don't want to be late to class on your first week so make sure you are always aware of what the time is and make sure it works.

13. Don't be tempted to bunk off lessons. It's easy because you think no one will notice but trust me, they do. I wouldn't know because I am a goody-too-shoes and have never done it but I have seen the consequences for the people who have.

14. Make the most out of your frees. If you want to pass with high grades, you need to put in the hours. Don't think, I'll do it when I will get home because trust me- you won't!

15. Equally social life is important. If you and your friends are both free at the same time, have lunch together. You can't be revising all the time.

16. Don't forget to eat. With no set lunch time at most colleges, it can be easy to completely forget about eating. I hardly ever ate my lunch (Mostly for other reasons, damn you OCD) but sometimes it was just because I would get caught up in an essay. This is not healthy.

17. Start revision early. Complete homework's on time. There are no detentions at college but once you get behind, especially if it's at the start of the year you will never catch back up again.

18. Don't call your teachers MR Miss or Mrs- it's just awkward.

19. If you have a personal tutor, build up a good relationship with them. They are there to help you out with any problems or issues you are having regardless of how small you think they are. If you are struggling with stress or the workload- talk to them!

20. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't be afraid to send your tutor an email asking them to go over something. It's important that you understand everything first time otherwise revision won't work.

21. People will try and bombard you will university stuff. It's important to have it in the back of your mind but don't worry if you don't have a clue what you are doing yet. Around Christmas is the time you should start thinking about it and start going on some uni open days.

22. If you don't like college, it's okay. If you are doing A levels with no intention of going to uni afterwards, that's okay. College (for the most part) is only two years out of your life. The terms are shorter than school, and you don't have to stay on campus all day. But please, if you are unhappy talk to someone. Your mental health is so important.

Please don't be afraid of starting college or sixth form in September. It's just another chapter in your life, admittedly quite a big one but nonetheless nothing to be scared about.
