She By H.C Warner | Book Review

If you are on the hunt for a really twisty, dark domestic thriller, then you are going to want to check out She by H.C. Warner* which was kindly sent to me by HQ books, which I'm going to be reviewing today for the blog tour. I was seriously impressed by this domestic thriller, if you enjoy gritty and suspenseful thrillers you are going to want to carry on reading.

What is She about:

She’s everything he dreamed of. Isn’t she?

Ben can’t believe his luck when Bella walks into his life, just when he needs her most. Sexy, impulsive and intelligent, Bella is everything he ever wanted. And Bella wants him. All to herself.

In fact, Bella decides that everything is better when it is just the two of them, making it harder for Ben’s friends and family to stay in touch. And then a sudden tragedy triggers a chain of events which throws Ben headlong into a nightmare.

Secrets, lies, vengeance and betrayal are at the heart of this utterly twisted story about a family that is destroyed when SHE becomes part of it…

What I liked about She:

My expectations going into this book were relatively low. I struggle with domestic thrillers, as I want to find the right balance between drama and actual suspense. She got that balance just right! This was such a well written, suspenseful read, that had me hooked from the very start.

I really enjoyed the writing style of this book. There was something addictive about it. It was gripping, engaging and really easy to read. I didn't want to put the book down.

There was some really good twists in this book that I did not see coming. They were literally gasp out loud moments. This book is very clever at tricking the reader into thinking one thing, when actually it is talking about something else.

One of my favourite things about this book, without giving spoilers, was the fact that this book turned stereotypes and misconceptions around domestic violence on their head. I think this book is really needed and has a really strong take home message.

This is definitely one of my favourite domestic thrillers I have ever read. I was not expecting to love it as much as I did. I really really recommend it, you love twisty dark domestic thrillers.

What did I not like about She:

As I have already said, I really enjoyed this book, more than I thought I would. The only tiny issue I had with this book was that it was a little bit repetitive in places. I don't want to give too much away but because of the way it was written which makes more sense if you read the book, some of it was slightly repetitive, but overall it wasn't a big issue and didn't really lessen my enjoyment of the book.

Who do I recommend She to:

I recommend She to anyone who loves a good, dark domestic thriller. I would also recommend it to people who maybe aren't as used to reading thrillers and read a lot of women's fiction, I think this would be a good book to introduce you to the thriller genre.

However, I would just add there are trigger warnings for emotional and physical domestic abuse. It is an important issue to read about and it is covered very well in this book. But if that is a topic that upsets you, you may want to avoid this one.

Overall thoughts:

Overall, I gave this four stars, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I will definitely be checking out more books from this author in the future. I think it was a fantastic debut novel.

She comes out on the 23rd January in paperback.
