It’s definitely not controversial to say that 2020 has been a stressful year for most people. With life turned upside down, right way up and then shaken around just a little more, it’s more important than ever that we look after ourselves, particularly our mental health.

Here are some of the simplest ways that you can start looking after your mental health on the ever-evolving journey to wellness and contentment.

Talk About It

Talking about your feelings, whether it be to a close friend or mental health professional, can be really beneficial.

It is important to remove the stigma that surrounds mental health; talking about your feelings, especially negative ones, should not be considered a sign of weakness.

Talking about your stress and venting out your worries can also be a cathartic experience; unloading your emotions can often make them seem less overwhelming.

Be Aware

Knowing yourself and being aware of what might set you on the path of a bad mental health day can be helpful when it comes to maintaining a good routine.

Eat Well

Our bodies are complex machines; to keep your brain feeling at the top of its game, you should be aware of what you’re putting into your body. Your brain needs various nutrients to stay healthy and function to its full capacity. A balanced diet catered to your needs is vital when it comes to managing your health. Drinking plenty of water every day also can’t hurt!

It should be noted that eating well isn’t going to be an instant fix for your mental health problems. However, it is a vital part of maintaining general health and wellbeing.

Take A Break

Give yourself some time to decompress. Taking short breaks just to reflect and breathe throughout the day can help stop you feeling overwhelmed.

Taking a break may mean going for a 30-minute stroll at lunchtime to stretch your muscles and get away from a stressful situation. It could also mean a mental break where you practice some relaxation techniques.

Listening to some music or guided meditation can also help get you out of your head and focus on something else.

Consider Natural Remedies

It should be made clear that CBD oil* is not a miracle cure for mental health problems, but there are proven benefits backed by research. CBD has been shown to help manage and alleviate the symptoms of stress by promoting relaxation and supporting your body’s natural responses.

If you are experiencing serious mental health issues, you should not rely on this as a cure and should talk to an expert about what you’re going through.

Spend Time with Loved Ones

Being social, even if you are an introvert, is really important for our mental health. Humans are social creatures, and even the slightest amount of quality social interaction can help boost our mood.

Spending more time with your friends, making plans with others and sticking to them, and having family meals are all great ways to promote social wellness and take care of our mental wellbeing.

Get Enough Sleep

Not getting enough sleep or only getting poor quality sleep can have disastrous effects on your mood, energy and ability to deal with stress. Long-term sleep deprivation can cause serious problems.

Winding down for the evening without a screen is important when it comes to maintaining a good sleep schedule that will result in a full night’s rest. Both your brain and body need time to recover after a stressful or intense day, and plenty of sleep is the only way to achieve this in the long run.

Taking care of your mental health can be difficult, but it shouldn’t be taboo to discuss or confront. If your mental health problems are persistent and prevent you from living to the fullest, then the help of a professional should be sought.

There are things we can all do to help manage our mental health in simple and productive ways. Even just taking a few of these steps is a move in the right direction.
