How to Create a Stunning Feature Wall

A feature wall can be a fantastic addition to any room. The eye should be drawn to it immediately, and yet it should not overpower the rest of the décor. Instead, it should complement them and help to draw the room together cohesively. Here are some things to think about when creating your feature wall.

Colour

The easiest place to start is with the colour of the wall. It should be very different from anything else in the room so that the eye is drawn to it. This does not always mean that it should be bright – if you like muted colours then there are plenty of ways to still create something eye-catching but a little muted.

Remembering to use the colour wheel can be one of the easiest ways to create something that stands out. You do not have to be garish here, but choosing colours on the opposite side of the wheel to the main ones used throughout the room will really help to create something interesting. For example, in a room decorated in shades of blue, notes of orange and yellow will always catch the eye.

Texture

A feature wall should always be a little different to the others in the room. This means that it is a fantastic opportunity for you to play with texture. Why not bring the outside in? Using something like black timber cladding means that you are going to be able to create a space that is eye-catching and tactile.

Black timber cladding is, of course, just one example of exterior materials that you could bring inside. Exposed brick or slate will always be classic options. You could also think about concrete or rubber for a more industrial space. Play with texture as much as you do colour!

Arrangement

Having spent so much time and effort creating the wall, you need to make sure that the eye is indeed drawn to it. For this reason, you need to make sure that you arrange the room around the wall.

It would be silly to put this work in and then immediately move a big and clunky piece of furniture right in front of it so you can’t see it. Though it might take you several goes to get right, you should try your best to arrange your furniture so it sits around the wall. Try to create natural resting points for your eyes so they move towards the wall, and change things up if you feel they aren’t working.

A feature wall is a tried and tested interior design trick that definitely creates an amazing space. If you are searching for the perfect addition to your room to really tie things together and make it into a cohesive space, you should consider creating a feature wall. Make it timeless, and it could even stay in place no matter how the rest of the room might change. What would your ideal feature wall look like, and how might you bring it to life?
