The Family By Louise Jensen | Book Review

If you are looking for a incredibly well written, compelling psychological thriller to read this Halloween? Then Look no further than The Family by Louise Jensen*. Today I'm going to be reviewing an absolutely amazing psychological thriller that was kindly sent to me by HQ Books. If you like psychological thrillers, you do not want to miss out on this one!

What is The Family about?

Laura is grieving after the sudden death of her husband. Struggling to cope emotionally and financially, Laura is grateful when a local community, Oak Leaf Organics, offer her and her 17-year-old daughter Tilly a home.

But as Laura and Tilly settle into life with their new ‘family’, sinister things begin to happen. When one of the community dies in suspicious circumstances Laura wants to leave but Tilly, enthralled by the charismatic leader, Alex, refuses to go.

Desperately searching for a way to save her daughter, Laura uncovers a horrifying secret but Alex and his family aren’t the only ones with something to hide. Just as Laura has been digging into their past, they’ve been digging into hers and she discovers the terrifying reason they invited her and Tilly in, and why they’ll never let them leave…

What I loved about The Family:

The Family is such a dark, creepy psychological thriller. I think it was incredibly well written and fast paced. It had me on the edge of my seat, the whole time while reading. I ended up finishing it all in one day because I could just not put it down.

One of the things I really liked about The Family was that it kind of focused on cults but it wasn't laid out to you directly as a reader, whether they were in a cult or not, which I really liked as it made the book more mysterious. It definitely added to the overall creepiness vibe of the book.

It also incorporated one of my favourite tropes in thriller books, the closed in setting in which people can't leave. Although it was more subtle than in other books I've read. Which I liked, because it was different and made the book more eerie.

There were so many twists and turns throughout the book, not just at the end. I much prefer this in thrillers because it definitely adds to the suspense. I made some predictions at the start of the book about where it was going to go but in the end it didn't go down that route, which is great because it definitely surprised me.

What did I not like about The Family:

Overall, I really liked The Family, the only minor complaint I had was that I wasn't too keen on reading from one character's perspective and reading the same day or scene again from another character's perspective. I just found it got a bit repetitive but it really didn't hinder my enjoyment of the book much at all. Its merely more of a personal preference.

Who would I recommend The Family to?

I would recommend The Family to any thriller lovers! If you like psychological thrillers that are hard to put down and are full of twists and turns, I think you will really like this book.

I also think would be great for people who aren't as familiar with the thriller genre, however, I will give trigger warnings for rape and bullying in this book. So if that it something that will affect you, maybe go into this one with caution.

Overall thoughts:

I ended up giving The Family, 4 stars. I really enjoyed it. I think it was incredibly well written, different and a highly enjoyable read. This is the fist book I have read by Louise Jensen but I'll definitely be checking out some of her older books and picking up anything she releases in the future. I highly recommend this book!

Thank you very much for reading, as always X

*This book was kindly sent to me by the publishers, however, all opinions are my own.

  1. Good right-up for family, I like to hear information about family because I am dreaming to have a good family.

    1. I want to thank Dr Emu a very powerful spell caster who help me to bring my husband back to me, few month ago i have a serious problem with my husband, to the extend that he left the house, and he started dating another woman and he stayed with the woman, i tried all i can to bring him back, but all my effort was useless until the day my friend came to my house and i told her every thing that had happened between me and my husband, then she told me of a powerful spell caster who help her when she was in the same problem I then contact Dr Emu and told him every thing and he told me not to worry my self again that my husband will come back to me after he has cast a spell on him, i thought it was a joke, after he had finish casting the spell, he told me that he had just finish casting the spell, to my greatest surprise within 48 hours, my husband really came back begging me to forgive him, if you need his help you can contact him with via email: or add him up on his whatsapp +2347012841542 is willing to help any body that need his help.

  2. I never believed that i will be happy again after much frustration. I have been rejected by my husband after Six(6) years of marriage just because he met another woman and he left me and the kids to suffer. One day when i was reading through the web i stumbled at a post on how chief dr lucky the great spell caster has helped people to restore broken marriages and relationships and curing of diseases. I emailed him immediately to help my situation via: He told me not to worry that my husband will return to me begging and shedding tears of forgiveness. I am so happy that my husband actually returned to me in 48 hours after i obeyed the words and instructions of chief dr lucky. contact him today in any of your problems for a lasting solution via: or call/whats app +2348132777335 Website:

  3. Thanks for recommending this book! I will definitely read this. You know, it seems to me more and more that ideal families can only be found in books and films. Indeed, in real life, there are far fewer happy families. I have several couples who at first were crazy about each other, but then, when they were already at the stage of filing documents for divorce, they simply hated each other. I think it’s better to live with a person before your marriage. Indeed, in this way you can get to know the person better, you will understand whether you can put up with his shortcomings or not. If your partner annoys you, this isn't normal. Just remember that. And I repeat, I'm will read this book.

  4. It is definitely possible, and actually very easy to win this delicious rewards by taking Mazzio’s Italian Eatery Survey. In fact, it will take you only a few minutes.

  5. Great book! Its main idea is now so consonant with my life. I got married six years ago, I am an orphan, my husband has a huge family. And over the years, I realized that I was literally caught in a trap. They crush and strangle me. I can't do this anymore and asked for a divorce eight months ago. Neither my husband nor his family let me go. I asked my husband to fill out the forms here, but he flatly refuses. His mother calls me ten times a day, then asks, then persuades, then threatens that I don't even think about getting a divorce. It seems that we will not be able to resolve this issue peacefully and I'm going to go to court.

  6. Great article! That is the kind of information that are meant to be shared around the net. 토토사이트
